New Zealand Population Growth Drops to 0.7 Percent in 2025

(MENAFN) New Zealand’s population growth has decelerated significantly, rising just 0.7 percent to 5.3 million in the year ending June 2025, according to Stats NZ on Wednesday. The slowdown affected all 16 regions of the country.

The latest figure marks a sharp drop from 2.3 percent growth in 2023 and 1.7 percent in 2024, Stats NZ said in a statement.

“Lower net migration gains in the June 2025 year led to slower population growth across all regions,” said Victoria Treliving, Stats NZ spokesperson for population estimates, projections, and coverage.

Unlike recent years, when migration was the main driver of growth, this year’s increase was primarily due to natural population growth—births exceeding deaths—according to the agency.

The Canterbury region recorded the fastest growth at 1.1 percent, while Auckland, the country’s largest city, expanded 1 percent to surpass 1.8 million residents, buoyed by a net migration gain of 6,300 during the year.
